Understanding the site and surrounding areas

The Port of Hastings Corporation has undertaken some preliminary investigations at the Old Tyabb Reclamation Area, and the surroudning area to gain a better understanding of the existing conditions of the site.

It is important to understand attributes of the site, as planning for construction takes time, and requires a thorough and informed understanding of the conditions to ensure a safe and effective works program.

Geotechnical settlement trials

In 2024, PoHC commenced a settlement trial at the OTRA. This trial involved placing gravel onto the OTRA to consolidate the ground underneath.

This trial has helped us understand the amount of gravel needed to consolidate the ground and how long this consolidation process will likely take.

A second settlement trial, involving high-energy impact compaction, a process using specialised vehicles to densify and stabilise soil layers, commenced in February 2025.

These trials will help us confirm the best method for ground improvement works.

Utilities corridor surveying

Our team have undertaken investigations along Bayview Road and Long Island Drive, as well as arterial roads and reserves to better understand utility locations near the project site.

It is important for the team to understand utilities (including water, sewerage, gas and electricity) prior to construction. At this stage, these works are investigations only.

Noise monitoring

The Port of Hastings Corporation has undertaken noise monitoring works near the Old Tyabb Reclamation Area to understand the existing noise conditions of the area.

This work will inform the EES process and construction methodology.
